Fall Wildlife Mixes

You need answers to these questions when deciding what food plot mix to buy.

MBS Seed's mixes were chosen based on performance, preference and season of use in Texas.

The components of our wildlife blends have been selected from MBS Seed’s food plot trials in Texas and were carefully chosen based on their performance and preference by deer.

Performance  •  Only plants that performed consistently well in our Texas soils and climate were selected for our mixes.  We won’t waste your time and money with plants that can’t handle our growing conditions.

Preference  •  Simply stated, deer like some plants more than others.  We have chosen only those plants that rated highest in deer preference in Texas food plots.

season of use  •  Deer eat different plants at different times of the year.  Plant a mix that will be used by deer during the period you need.

Our Deer Season Mix has plants to attract deer during the hunting season, and our Wildlife Clover Mix has plants that provide a highly nutritional supplement during the time of year when native browse is not available.

Deer Season Mix

50 lb bag

  • Mixture of Oats, Wheat, Rye and Austrian Winter Peas.

  • Excellent attraction and nutrition for deer.  Best mix for hunting season.  Longer period of attraction and nutrition than any one item can provide alone.

  • Similar seed sizes allow for a uniform blend and planting depth.

  • Adapted to a wide range of soil types and conditions.

  • Used by quail and turkey for green forage and grain.

Planting Dates:    September thru October

Rate:     Broadcast  75-90 lbs/acre, or

             Drill 60-75 lbs/acre

Depth:   1-1½ inches deep

Fertilize and lime according to soil test.

Make it Better:  Add 25 lbs per acre of Iron & Clay Cowpeas or Blackeyed Cowpeas to your Deer Season Mix when planting in September.  Cowpeas planted in the late summer are probably the best early-season attractant for deer, whether you are hunting the early bow season, or looking to draw in deer from surrounding areas and get them concentrated on YOUR food plots.  Don't expect a lot of production from them, however.  Deer will generally eat the cowpeas at a very young stage, which will kill the plant.  And what the deer don't get to will die with the first frost.  But these young, palatable pea plants at the end of a long, hot summer are highly attractive to deer and will bring them to your plot and get them started on the Deer Season Mix quickly.

Wildlife Clover Mix

10 lb bag

  • Mixture of Rose Clover, Crimson Clover, Red Clover, Arrowleaf Clover, White Clover, Yellow-blossom Sweetclover and Hairy Vetch.

  • Has legume species adapted to heavy upland soils, moist bottomland soils, and sandy, acidic soils.

  • Similar seed sizes allow for a uniform blend and planting depth.

  • High-protein food source for deer from late fall through early summer.

  • Used by quail and turkey as a nutritious forage and insect attractant.

Planting Dates:    September thru October

Rate:     Broadcast  15-20 lbs/acre, or

             Drill 12-15 lbs/acre

Depth:   ¼-½  inches deep

Fertilize and lime according to soil test.

Inoculate seed.

To create a full-season plot high in protein that will attract and benefit both deer and gamebirds from the fall through early summer, plant

50 lbs/acre of Deer Season Mix as recommended above, then broadcast

10 lbs/acre of Wildlife Clover Mix and lightly cover to ¼ inch deep.

These mixes are blended according to the basic principles of food plot planting and selection:

Seed size and planting depth compatibility,

Adaptability to local conditions, and

Utilization by wildlife.
