How much do you know about the wildlife mix that you are buying?
Open any hunting publication and you're sure to be
bombarded with dozens of advertisements for food plot mixes. Don't be
fooled by promises of "magic beans" that can be thrown on top of the ground and
produce tons of high protein forage for growing monster bucks. Ask a few
simple questions about what you are spending your money on, and decide for
yourself if it will work in your area and fit your needs.
Is it composed of compatible, similarly sized seed? Different sized seed have different planting depth requirements. Mixing these different sizes together is a waste of your money. You’ll wind up with an unacceptable stand of plants, because you’ve planted half your seed either too deep or too shallow. Not to mention that they will separate into layers as the planter is jostled. Besides, how do you adjust a planter to allow for large seed to flow properly without the small seed running out like water? Is it going to fill the role that you need? Some mixes promise to attract deer, and others promise high nutritional quality. But different food plot plants will attract deer at different times and have higher or lower nutrition levels at different times of the year. For example, if you are planting for the hunting season, make sure you plant something that will attract deer at that time, and not after the season has ended. If you want a nutritionally high plot, plant one that offers plants with high nutritive values and the time of year when deer need it, not when nutritionally high native browse is abundant. Will wildlife use it? It’s a no-brainer; if deer won’t eat it, then don’t plant it. Plant a food plot with items that have been tested for wildlife preference in Texas. MBS Seed Wildlife Blends are mixed according to the basic principles of food plot planting and selection. Our mixes are composed of similar sized seed, to ensure a uniform planting depth and mix consistency. We tell you what the mix is intended for, so that you can select the blend that will fill your attraction and nutrition needs at the time of year that you need it. We have researched and tested ALL of the components of our mixes IN TEXAS. We selected only the items that were preferred by deer and birds and could stand up to our weather and soils. In short, our blends are based on local experience and responsible seed stewardship. PLANT WHAT WORKS HERE! The components of our wildlife blends have been selected from local food plot trials based on:
Don’t believe all of the advertising that you read in magazines!
You CAN’T grow bigger bucks simply by planting food plots. It’s just not true. You’ve got to have the basics of deer management taken care of first (population, range condition, etc.).
However, a proper food plot will undoubtedly help out, as long as everything else is in place. Food plots are valuable tools for attracting deer to cull, count, or observe. They are also important as a source of additional nutrition during times of the year when deer are stressed and nutritionally demanding.
